A Milonga Alternativa

Fuega Dance

Tango and related dancing to jazz, soul, rock, edgy contemporary. Not traditional tango music — but very much a dance floor.

Monthly at Downside Up in Phoenix. Co-hosted with Aniessa and Gail, who keep the room alive. $10 at the door. $5 off if you bring flowers.

What Fuega Dance Is

Tango's structure (lead, follow, connection, close embrace if you want it) applied to music that tango DJs usually skip. Jazz standards. Soul. Old rock. Edgy contemporary cuts. If it has groove and breath, it works.

If you already dance tango, this is a room where you can stretch the vocabulary. If you've never danced tango, this is a lower-pressure way in — the music is more familiar than a traditional milonga, and the format is still clear.

Come with a partner or come solo. Watch first if you want. Ask someone to dance if you don't.

Seasonal Rhythm

Fuega moves with the Arizona year. Warm months (May through October) live at Downside Up — indoor, air-conditioned, non-alcoholic. Cool months (November through April) live at Brady's garden in the Phoenix area or rotating local garden spots — outdoor, fire, stars.

The dancing is the constant. The venue follows the weather.
