You just walked into Arizona's Night Café. Downside Up is a non-alcoholic lounge at 12820 N 19th Ave, founded by Aniessa Wong and her mother Gail Elbourne — a mother-daughter duo who built this space because they were tired of screens replacing real conversation. Their tagline says it: "Where everybody is somebody and nobody is a stranger." There's no alcohol here. What there is: handcrafted mocktails, adaptogenic elixirs, kava, and food made with care. Wednesdays bring Margin & Mic — writing prompts, journal time, and an open mic for spoken word. Thursdays are Community Game Night or The Upflow Sessions (music, poetry, comedy). Fridays are Paint, Sketch & Sip with local artists. This isn't a bar pretending to be sober. This is a gathering place that never needed alcohol in the first place. The energy is honest. The people are present. The drinks are real — just built differently. Aniessa and Gail created something Phoenix didn't have: a room where you can show up as yourself, meet someone new, and remember the whole night.
